Each square is a month; a stamp means I was away. A month is stamped only where I know it. An empty square means not known yet, not at home.

The Last Supper, Leonardo
Leonardo painted it on a dry wall instead of in true fresco, and it has been fragile ever since: the last restoration took 21 years. In August 1943 a bomb hit the refectory; the sandbagged wall stood.

02 / 08
The horses of St Mark
Four horses of almost pure copper, taken from Constantinople in 1204, taken again by Napoleon in 1797 and brought back in 1815. The originals moved inside the basilica in the 1980s; the ones on the façade are copies.

03 / 08
Giambologna's Neptune
Cast between 1563 and 1566, 3.35 m of bronze over the main square, cleaned in 2017. Walk on under the porticoes, past a university that has taught since 1088.

04 / 08
Michelangelo's David
Carved from 1501 to 1504 out of a block two sculptors had already given up on. He stood in the Piazza della Signoria until 1873, then moved indoors to the Accademia; the one outside is a copy.

05 / 08
The lean that saves it
It tilted by the third floor, in 1178. A pause of nearly a century let the clay settle, and the same soft soil now keeps the tower from resonating in earthquakes. It has ridden out at least four strong ones since 1280.

06 / 08
Pesto, on its home coast
Fishing villages stacked on cliffs, tied together by the 12 km Blue Trail. Thousands of kilometres of dry-stone terraces hold up the vineyards. Eat Monterosso anchovies, pesto on its home coast, and focaccia; locals dip it in their morning cappuccino.

07 / 08
The Capitoline Wolf
The she-wolf of Rome's founding myth was long taken for Etruscan, 5th century BC. Lab dating says she was cast between 1021 and 1153 AD; the twins were added in the late 1400s. Pope Sixtus IV gave her to the people of Rome in 1471.

08 / 08
The Farnese Hercules
A Roman copy signed by Glykon of Athens, after a lost bronze by Lysippos. Dug up in Rome's Baths of Caracalla in 1546 and moved to Naples in 1787, he rests on his club in the archaeological museum, which also keeps the finds from Pompeii.

Morning after Naples · the trip in numbers
1,117km travelled, as the crow flies
1.7× the straight line from Milan to Naples (657 km). The line drops as you go south; it climbs back north only once, Pisa to Cinque Terre.

Trips shaped like these don't get chased; they get designed. A dozen European capitals carry 51 stops between them; Japan is 11 stops in one country; home is the two pins that never leave. Hubs first, spokes after, slack left in — the network-design habit, applied to annual leave.
Gazetteer · 82 cities · 19 countries
Stamps are coordinates. Lines join the hubs of each run; the towns hang off them. The two dense regions open up below.
Longest depends on the axis: Europe has the most stops (51) and crosses the most borders; Japan packs 11 into one country, Sapporo to Miyajima; the US is the only run that never crosses a border. Maps flatter whichever metric you pick.
One open ring breaks the pattern: Kobe is marked but not yet visited, so it is not one of the 82 cities.

Sounds of the road
Each station draws its place’s horizon in ink, and the sound moves the hills. What you heard a moment ago drifts into the far ridges.
Sound sketches, made in your browser from filtered noise and tones. Field recordings will replace them. Nothing plays until you press Listen.
Where next
The globe turns through the hub of every run. The board beside it pages through all the cities on the map, then leaves room for the next one.

Passport
Every country abroad lands as an entry stamp, dated with my first visit where I know the year. India is home, so no stamp.
